Gondola Shelving Installation Guide

Install Lozier gondola shelving: base bracket assembly, upright placement, rail and shelf installation sequence. Leveling, safety, and configuration checks included.

Gondola installed out of level or sequence will not carry rated load installation errors are a safety issue, not a cosmetic one.

  • Assembly sequence: base brackets and base deck first; uprights second; rails third; back panels fourth; shelves last
  • Leveling is done at the base bracket stage adjustable base legs accommodate uneven floors up to 1in variation
  • Upright connection to base bracket: verify both front and rear tabs are fully seated before adding rail weight
  • Rail installation: top rail first to set upright spacing; bottom rail second to lock the base dimension
  • Back panel installation before shelves panels require clear upright access that shelves obstruct
  • Load test each section with product before the store opens rated load is a sustained load rating, not a static test weight
Compatibility: Installation instructions apply to Lozier gondola components. Components from other manufacturers including Madix and Storflex use different connection systems and are not guaranteed to be compatible with Lozier uprights or rails.
Designed for: New store installations, store remodels, gondola section additions, and replacement of damaged sections in existing runs

Gondola shelving assembly follows a fixed sequence: base components first, uprights second, rails third, back panels and shelves last. Deviating from this sequence creates rework back panels cannot be installed after shelves without removing the shelves, and rails cannot be set at correct height after uprights are loaded. This guide covers the standard installation sequence with notes on leveling, connection verification, and load checks before the section carries product.

Tools and Preparation

Required tools: rubber mallet, torpedo level, tape measure, and a 9/16in or 1/2in wrench for base leg adjustment bolts. No power tools are required for standard Lozier gondola assembly connections are tool-free snap-fit or friction-fit. A second person is required for upright placement on sections 72in and taller. Work from a clean, clear floor area product should not be on the floor in the installation zone.

Assembly Sequence

Step 1 Base Brackets. Position base brackets at the correct section spacing (36in or 48in center-to-center). Adjust the leveling legs until the bracket top rail is level across the section. Verify level in both directions front-to-back and side-to-side. A base bracket that is not level produces an upright that leans under load.

Step 2 Uprights. Set uprights onto the base bracket mounting points. Each upright has front and rear tabs that engage with the base bracket. Press firmly and verify both tabs are fully seated before proceeding a partially seated upright will shift when the rail is installed. For 84in uprights, use two people.

Step 3 Top Rail. Install the top rail first. The top rail sets the final spacing between uprights. Measure the upright-to-upright spacing at the top rail before locking this determines whether shelves at full depth will fit correctly.

Step 4 Bottom Rail. Install the bottom rail to lock the base dimension. The bottom rail connects at the base of the uprights and prevents outward spread under load. Do not skip the bottom rail on island sections it is a structural component, not a cosmetic one.

Step 5 Back Panels. Install back panels before shelves. Panels slide into upright channels from the top and seat at the bottom. Install panels with the store-facing side oriented correctly pegboard holes face outward on pegboard panels. Back panels cannot be installed after shelves without removing the shelves.

Step 6 Shelves. Install shelves last. Set shelf hooks into the upright slot at the specified height. TL shelves hang horizontally. DL shelves angle at 5° or 15° depending on hook position. Verify each shelf is level side-to-side before loading product.

Common Installation Errors

  • Skipping back panel installation: Back panels installed after shelves require shelf removal doubling the labor.
  • Unleveled base brackets: Uprights lean under load when the base is not level; leveling at the base stage is easier than correcting it after uprights and rails are installed.
  • Partial tab engagement on uprights: Uprights that appear seated but have one tab unengaged will shift or tip when the section is loaded.
  • Skipping the bottom rail on island sections: Island sections without a bottom rail have no resistance to outward spread at the base under heavy loads.

Compatible Products

  • Island Sections complete island section components for new installations
  • Wall Sections wall-mounted sections with back extension and back panel options
  • Uprights standard and heavy-duty in 48, 60, 72, 84in heights
  • Base Brackets standard and Load Easer options with adjustable leveling legs
  • TL and DL Shelves flat and downslope shelves in all standard depths

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct order to install gondola shelving?

Base brackets first, then uprights, then top rail, then bottom rail, then back panels, then shelves. This sequence matters because back panels require access to upright channels that shelves obstruct, and rails set the upright spacing that all subsequent components depend on. Installing components out of sequence typically requires partial disassembly to correct.

How do I level gondola shelving on an uneven floor?

Lozier base brackets have adjustable leveling legs that accommodate up to approximately 1in of floor variation. Set the base bracket in position and adjust the leveling legs until the bracket top surface is level in both directions front-to-back and side-to-side. Use a torpedo level. Complete leveling at the base bracket stage before installing uprights correcting a level problem after uprights and rails are installed requires partial disassembly.

Do I need to anchor gondola shelving to the wall or floor?

Standard freestanding island gondola does not require floor anchoring under normal use conditions. Wall sections are typically fastened to wall studs through the back extension. In seismic zones or high-traffic environments, consult local building codes for fixture anchoring requirements some jurisdictions require anchoring for fixtures over a specified height. Heavy-load installations with Load Easer base brackets should be inspected by a qualified person before going into service.

Can I install gondola shelving without a second person?

Base bracket placement and shelf installation can be done solo. Upright placement on sections 72in and taller requires two people one to hold the upright plumb while the other seats the base tabs. Attempting to set tall uprights solo risks the upright tipping during the seating process. Rail installation is possible solo for sections up to 84in with the right staging setup, but two people is faster and safer.

How do I add sections to an existing gondola run?

New sections connect to existing runs by aligning the base brackets end-to-end at the correct center-to-center spacing, then running rails that span the connection. The top and bottom rails of the new section must align with the rails of the existing section. If the existing run has a different height than the new section, the rails will not align verify heights match before ordering components. For sections with different depths, the back-of-gondola line must remain consistent to keep aisles clear.
