Gondola Shelving Glossary

Definitions

Gondola Section

A single free-standing shelving bay built from two uprights, base brackets, top/center/bottom rails, base deck, base front, back panels, and shelves. The Lozier gondola section is the standard modular unit of retail fixturing.

Island Section

A double-sided gondola section that merchandises from both Side A and Side B. Used in the interior of a store where customers walk around it. Requires base brackets, decks, back panels, and shelves on both sides.

Wall Section

A single-sided gondola section installed against a perimeter wall. Half the components of an island section (one side only). Typically taller than island sections since back-side sightlines are not a constraint.

End Cap

The capped end of a gondola run, presented head-on to shoppers walking down the main aisle. High-visibility merchandising space. Requires end trim, an end upright, and typically a dedicated back panel style.

Upright

The vertical member of a gondola section that carries shelves. Lozier standard uprights (prefix U) come in heights from 30 in to 108 in. Heavy-duty uprights use prefix UH; wall-mount use prefix WMU.

Base Bracket

The floor-level footing that supports an upright. Sits on the floor, receives the upright tabs, and carries the base deck. Standard prefix BB; heavy-duty variants exist. Load-Easer bracket is a specialty base that offers deeper decks or forward extension.

Base Deck

The bottom shelf of a gondola section that sits on the base brackets. Also called the toe kick shelf. Lozier S-Style base decks come in widths of 24, 30, 36, and 48 inches and depths from 22 to 30 inches. Prefix SD (standard) or HDSD (heavy duty).

Base Front

The vertical panel between the floor and the base deck. Hides the base bracket structure and protects the merchandise from floor debris. Prefix CBF (Closed Base Front).

Shelf

The horizontal merchandising surface above the base deck. Lozier standard shelves come in depths from 10 to 22 inches and widths matching the section width. TL / DL / HL prefixes indicate lip style and load rating.

Top Rail

The horizontal member spanning between the tops of two uprights at the top of a gondola section. Sets the final upright-to-upright spacing. Prefix RxxT where xx is the section width.

Center Rail

The horizontal member spanning between two uprights at the mid-height of a section. Adds lateral rigidity and provides an attachment point for back panels. Prefix RxxC.

Bottom Rail

The horizontal member spanning between two uprights just above the base deck. Resists outward spread at the base under load. Prefix RxxB. Required on every Lozier Island and Wall section.

Back Panel

The vertical merchandising surface between the two uprights. Available in Pegboard, Marteck (perforated slot pattern), or Slotwall for accessory hanging. Woodgrain is special-order only.

Pegboard

A back panel style with a regular grid of round holes for pegs and hooks. Standard Lozier offering. Prefix BE with suffix indicating pegboard.

Marteck

A back panel style with a regular grid of horizontal slots for merchandising hooks and hangers. Lozier proprietary pattern. Prefix BE with suffix M.

Slotwall

A back panel style with horizontal grooves that accept slotwall accessories (hooks, faceouts, shelves). Standard Lozier offering. SI (Slotwall with Inserts) is not a standard offering.

Facing

One front-face-showing unit of a SKU on a shelf. A merchandising density metric: shelf feet per SKU times facings per SKU equals visual dominance. See Facing Density Score.

SKU

Stock Keeping Unit. The unique identifier for a single product variant (specific size, color, finish, or configuration). Distinct from part number in that a SKU is inventory-tracked at the retailer level.

Finish

The paint or powder-coat color applied to a Lozier component. Standard finishes (Platinum, Charcoal, Cool White, White, Gray, Silver) ship in 1 to 3 business days. Catalog finishes (Statuary Bronze, Copper Vein, Oak Melamine, etc.) are 8 to 10 week lead time.

Lozier Part Number

The Lozier component identifier, encoded as prefix + dimensions + finish code. Example: SD48-22.W08 = Standard Deck, 48 inch wide, 22 inch deep, Cool White finish. See our How to Read a Lozier Part Number article for the full decoding key.
