The 4-foot (48-inch) gondola section is the industry-standard width across every major retail format for a reason: broader per-run economics, easier replacement sourcing, and the widest catalog compatibility. The 3-foot (36-inch) section has legitimate use cases. Where customers most often get burned is assuming components are interchangeable between the two widths. Most are not.

What Is Actually Shared Between 36in and 48in Sections

Only two component families are truly section-width-independent:

  • Uprites, ordered by height, depth, and duty (standard vs heavy). A single Uprite pair sits between two adjacent sections regardless of whether those sections are 36 or 48 inches wide.
  • Base Brackets, ordered by depth only (11 to 31 inches). The Base Bracket sits under an Uprite and is section-width-agnostic.

That is the entire list of shared components. Anything else on the BOM is width-specific.

What Is Width-Specific and Must Be Ordered Per Section

Every one of these is ordered per section width and is not interchangeable between 36in and 48in sections:

  • Base Decks (SD, HDSD, SDRE), the standard SD deck is ordered by width in 2ft, 30in, 3ft, or 4ft options. The Heavy Duty (HDSD) deck is available only in 4ft. A 36-inch deck will not fit a 48-inch section and vice versa.
  • Shelves (TL, DL), Tilt-Level and Down-Level shelves are both ordered by width. A 36-inch shelf will not fit a 48-inch section.
  • Rails (Top, Center, Bottom), Rails span between the two Uprites of a specific section. Ordered per section width.
  • Back Panels (BE), Pegboard, Marteck, Slotwall, and solid back extensions are all ordered per section width.

If you order a 36-inch shelf and try to install it on a 48-inch section, it will not seat into the Uprite slot pattern at the correct span. Same the other direction. There is no adapter or mounting trick for this, the shelf-to-Uprite geometry is fixed.

Mixing Widths Within a Run

Mixing 36 and 48 inch sections in the same run is fully supported and common (a 48-inch primary run terminating in a 36-inch feature endcap, for example). Because Uprites and Base Brackets are shared, the physical junction between a 36 and 48 inch section is seamless.

What you have to do is spec every non-shared component per section: each section needs its own width-matched deck, shelves, rails, and back panels called out on the BOM. Copy-paste-and-multiply from a single-width quote is the most common way to end up with mismatched parts.

When 36-Inch Sections Are the Right Call

Three situations. Anything outside these, stay with 48 inches:

1. Floor Plan Constraint

If your run length leaves an awkward remainder in 48-inch sections (a 42-foot run that would need ten 48-inch sections plus a 2-foot filler), running 36-inch sections instead may let you finish cleanly. Check both widths before deciding, sometimes a 48-inch run with a well-placed endcap eliminates the filler problem entirely.

2. Feature or Specialty Sections

A narrower fixture reads as visually distinct from the surrounding run. Cosmetics islands in a pharmacy, seasonal features in a grocery, or a spirits section in a c-store often use 36-inch sections to break the visual rhythm of the surrounding 48-inch aisles. Use this deliberately, not accidentally.

3. Endcap Proportion

A 36-inch endcap tends to frame a standard 6 to 8 foot aisle at a proportion that reads right without measuring. A 48-inch endcap can visually overwhelm a narrower aisle.

Linear Facing Math

A 48-inch section carries 33% more linear facing per section than a 36-inch section. The Uprite pair and Base Bracket count is identical, so the shared-component cost per linear foot of facing is lower on 48-inch sections. That is the underlying reason 48-inch is the industry default.

What About 24-Inch and 30-Inch Sections?

Both are catalog-standard section widths (2 feet and 30 inches, respectively). Twenty-four-inch sections show up in tight galley pharmacies and small-format c-stores where every foot of aisle matters. Thirty-inch sections show up in feature displays where the exact footprint has been designed around a specific fixture. Both use the same Uprite / Base Bracket pattern as 36 and 48. Both use width-specific decks, shelves, rails, and back panels.

Ordering Advice

Whatever width you pick, order all sections of that width in the same PO where possible. Supplemental orders can arrive with subtle lot-to-lot finish variation that is difficult to match to fixtures already installed.
