Every Lozier gondola section has a specific height above which the installation manual requires it to be anchored to the floor. The rule is stated in one sentence on page 7 of Lozier's "Gondola Shelving" install document, 01-13P Revision C:
"The height of the Uprite (including Extension Uprites, if any) must not exceed the leveler spacing by a ratio of 6:1 when unanchored."
That is the rule. Six inches of Uprite for every one inch of leveler spacing. If the ratio is exceeded, the section will overturn under load unless it is anchored to the floor or otherwise braced.
This article walks through what "leveler spacing" actually means, what the 6:1 threshold works out to for each base size, how Wall Sections differ from Island Sections, and the two common site conditions (carpet, glass doorkits) that reduce the ceiling by another 12 inches.
What "leveler spacing" is
Leveler spacing is the horizontal distance between the two leveling legs at the base of each Uprite. On a Wall Section it is measured across the depth of a single base. On an Island Section it is measured across the paired bases on both sides of the Uprite. The leveler footprint is what resists overturning: a wider footprint holds a taller section stable; a narrower footprint tips sooner.
Lozier does not publish leveler spacing as a customer-facing spec. Instead, the install manual publishes threshold tables that map base size directly to the tallest unanchored Uprite each base can carry. Those tables are what you actually use in the field.
Wall Section thresholds
For single-sided Wall Sections, the tallest unanchored Uprite is set by the base size:

Read the table this way: a 16" base can carry an unanchored 72" Uprite. Anything taller than that on a 16" base must be floor-anchored. The math checks against 6:1 within a fraction of an inch (16" base gives 12 3/4" leveler spacing; 12.75 x 6 = 76.5", and the manual rounds down to 72" as the published safe threshold).
There is one additional Wall Section rule that supersedes the table: the Base Brackets of every free-standing Wall Section must be anchored to the floor, regardless of Uprite height. The install manual is explicit on this. A Wall Section that is not backed against a building wall behaves like a top-heavy Island Section with no counterweight on the front side, and the 6:1 table alone does not protect against backward tipping. Anchor the Base Brackets to the floor even on a 54" section with a 13" base.
Island Section thresholds
Island Sections have merchandise on both sides, so the leveler footprint is the pair of bases. The install manual publishes the following table for double-sided Islands:

A double-sided 13"/13" island can stand 114" tall without floor anchoring. The same Uprite on a single-sided Wall Section maxes out at 54" unanchored, because the leveler footprint is half.
Above 144" Uprite height, Lozier says to contact Lozier Marketing directly for engineering guidance. The published tables do not extend past 144".
The unbalanced-load caveat on tall Islands
Even inside the 6:1 threshold, tall unanchored Island Sections with heavily one-sided merchandising can still overturn. The install manual adds a specific caution:
- 13" base with Uprite height greater than 78": unbalanced load not to exceed 6,000 in-lbs.
- 16" base with Uprite height greater than 102": unbalanced load not to exceed 6,000 in-lbs.
An "unbalanced load" is the difference in shelf-load moment between the front side and the back side of an Island Section. If the planogram is symmetric (roughly equal weight on both sides at each shelf height), the caveat does not apply. If one side of the island is loaded heavily and the other side is empty or light, the caveat applies and the section either needs to be re-planogrammed, anchored, or rebuilt with a wider base pair.
Site-condition modifiers that reduce the ceiling by 12 inches
Two site conditions reduce every threshold in the tables above by 12 inches:
- Glass doorkits on a Wall Section, or on one side only of an Island Section. Adding glass changes the section's center of mass and reduces the safe unanchored height by 12".
- Fixture placed on carpet. Carpet under the leveler feet reduces the effective bracing and the same 12" reduction applies.
These modifiers stack with the base 6:1 threshold, not with each other. A 16" base wall section is limited to 72" unanchored on hard floor without glass; drop that to 60" on carpet, or 60" with glass on hard floor.
What "anchor to the floor" actually means
Lozier specifies three anchor plate parts for floor anchoring:
- DC1241 Uprite Anchor Plate. Secures the Uprite leveling leg directly to the floor.
- DC1242 Base Bracket Anchor Plate. Secures the Base Bracket to the floor.
- DC1248 Multi-Purpose Anchor Plate. Used at end-of-run, Wall End Display, and limited-access anchoring positions where DC1241 or DC1242 will not fit.
All three accept 1/4" or 3/8" anchor bolts (not included) through 7/16" holes, and disappear under the base once installed.
These are floor anchors. They are a different part from the DC2191 Wall-Mount Bracket, which fastens a Wall Section Uprite to a building wall rather than to the floor. Anchoring a Wall Section to the wall with a DC2191 does not remove the requirement to also anchor the Base Bracket to the floor when the 6:1 threshold is exceeded, but the DC2191 does provide a second brace point against forward tipping and is commonly specified alongside the DC1242 on tall wall runs.
Seismic zones
The 6:1 rule is Lozier's stability rule for standard installations. Seismic zones can impose additional anchoring requirements that supersede it. The install manual points explicitly at local authorities:
"Contact local building official for anchoring requirements in seismic zones."
Anchor plates are also required on any Lozier section over 5 feet tall in certain seismic zones per the Lozier catalog, independent of the 6:1 ratio. If your site is in a seismic-designated jurisdiction, plan on anchoring every section over 60" regardless of what the base-size table says.
The back-side load warning
One more rule that fails frequently in the field and belongs in the same conversation as the 6:1 threshold: never hang peg hooks, shelves, or other accessories on the back side of a Wall Section. The install manual is explicit. Wall Sections do not have Base Brackets on the back side, so the back side has no leveler footprint to resist overturning under a hanging load. Using the back for merchandise display can tip the section forward regardless of anchoring on the front.
Quick decision guide
Standing in front of an installation site with a spec sheet, this is the order to check:
- Is this a free-standing Wall Section (not backed against a building wall)? If yes: anchor the Base Brackets to the floor. Do not skip.
- What is the base size and Uprite height? Look up the tallest-unanchored value in the appropriate table.
- Does the section have glass doorkits, or is it going on carpet? Subtract 12" from the threshold. (Both conditions? Ask Lozier; the manual does not stack them.)
- Is the section in a seismic zone? Anchor regardless if over 5' tall, and confirm with the local building official.
- Is this an Island Section that will be loaded heavily on one side only? Check the 6,000 in-lb unbalanced-load rule and either symmetrize the load, anchor, or upsize the base.
All five checks are one-line rules from the same page of the same install document. Following them protects the fixture, the store staff, and the shopping customer. Skipping them is how sections overturn.
