The Lozier Gondola Shelving install manual is more specific than most crews use it. Every one of the six errors below is either explicitly warned against or made likely by a step that is easy to skip. If your installers are running from the previous install rather than the current manual, these are the failure modes to check for.
Error 1: Installing All Back Panels Before Leveling
The install manual explicitly instructs, at Step 5-6: "Assemble remaining framework along chalkline. Do not install remaining Backs yet!" The sequence is: install the framework, install only the lower back panel (with a Splicer Rail for two-piece backs), then complete the leveling procedure with a string line, then install the remaining backs.
Backs installed before the string-line leveling force partial disassembly to complete the level. Follow the manual sequence: framework, one lower back, level, then all other backs.
Error 2: Missing the Second Center Rail on 96in+ Sections
The Lozier catalog specifies: "96"H-144"H Backs require two Center Rails." A section that is 96 inches or taller with a back panel needs two Center Rails, not one. Because most retail sections in the 72 to 84 inch range use only one Center Rail, a run of 96-inch sections quoted from a 72-inch template will short-order every second Center Rail. Verify Center Rail count against section height on every BOM.
Error 3: Retrofitting Slotwall Back Panels Into Low-Ceiling Spaces
The Lozier catalog specifies that Slotwall back panels require 60 inches of clearance above the shelving to install (the panels drop into the top rail from above and need vertical room to clear). In stores where ceiling height above the fixture is less than 60 inches, Slotwall cannot be installed as designed. This shows up on install day, not in the plan review, and forces either a substitution to Pegboard or Marteck or an unplanned change order.
If you are retrofitting into a space with a low ceiling above the gondola, confirm the Slotwall clearance before ordering. Pegboard and Marteck do not have this above-fixture clearance requirement.
Error 4: Skipping the String-Line Leveling Procedure
The install manual's Step 8 procedure is specific and often skipped in favor of a per-upright carpenter's level check. The documented procedure is:
- 8.1 Stretch a string line tightly between the end Uprites using a leveling leg wrench or wedge placed in the same slot on each end Uprite.
- 8.2 Find the highest Uprite in the run (the one with the most slots above the string line). Adjust that Uprite's leveling leg down until the string line matches the same slot as the end Uprites, or as low as the leveling leg allows.
- 8.3 Use a carpenter's level on the face of each Uprite. Adjust the Base Bracket leveling leg with a screwdriver inserted into the Base Bracket to plumb the Uprite. The manual notes a recommended rearward Uprite tilt of about 3/4in for Wall Sections that will be anchored to the wall.
Level-by-eye or level-per-Uprite without the string line produces cumulative slot mis-registration across a long run, meaning shelf brackets on the fourth or fifth Uprite may not seat into the same horizontal slot as the shelf brackets on the first Uprite. The failure is visible only after the shelves start to load unevenly. Use the string line.
Error 5: Not Anchoring Free-Standing Wall Sections
The install manual states: "Anchor Base Brackets of all free-standing Wall Sections (those not backed against a building wall or other support) regardless of Uprite height to leveler spacing ratio." The rule applies to every free-standing Wall Section, height-independent. If your Wall Sections are not physically against a building wall, their Base Brackets must be anchored to the floor.
Additional guidance from the manual for long runs: "If a long run (greater than 12ft) of wall sections is to be anchored to the wall, be sure that the center-to-center distance between uprites is correct. Do this by temporarily installing two continuous levels of shelving before anchoring the uprites to the wall. Failure to do so could result in shelves that do not fit correctly or at all."
Error 6: Combining Lozier and Non-Lozier Parts
Short and non-negotiable: "Do not combine Lozier products with non-Lozier products." This is a direct manual instruction. Every Lozier component is designed and tested as part of a matched system. Substituting non-Lozier shelves, brackets, or panels changes the load ratings and the failure modes and voids the compatibility the manual assumes throughout.
A Note on the Field Wisdom We Left Out
There is a lot of gondola-install advice on the internet that is plausible but not documented by Lozier. We omitted anything we could not cite to the manual or the catalog. If a claim is worth putting in writing, it is worth having a source for. When your crew has questions, the manual is the source of truth.
