Wall Section Back Extensions: When One Panel Is Not Tall Enough

Lozier wall sections start with a base kit that carries the section up to standard shelving height. When you want the merchandising surface to keep going, whether that is to reach a soffit, hit a sightline target across the store, or add pegged product above eye level, you add a back extension. For most heights, one panel does the job. Past a certain point, though, one panel will not get you there, and the spec becomes a two-piece stack with an extra Center Rail in the middle.

This guide walks through when a single panel is enough, when you need two, which pairings Lozier actually publishes, and where the SKUs come from so your order lands right the first time.

Single-Piece Back Extensions: 36" to 72"

Lozier publishes single-piece back extension panels in nominal heights starting at 6" and running upward, with the practical extension range topping out at 72" for a single sheet. Sub-36" panels absolutely exist in the catalog, and they earn their keep as the lower or upper half of a two-piece stack. As a standalone extension above the base, though, 36", 42", 48", 66", and 72" are the everyday specs.

The SKU pattern for a back extension panel is BE + width digit + height + style letter + finish. Catalog line 1177 shows the format cleanly with BE 4 42 P PLT, a 4-foot wide, 42" tall, Pegboard panel in Platinum. Read that as BE442P-PLT on a purchase order.

Back Panel Style Codes

The style letter tells the factory what pattern to press or slot into the panel. Lozier's back extension styles are:

• P = Pegboard
• M = Marteck (fine horizontal slat)
• ME = Marteck Extended
• W = Woodgrain (special order, plan lead time before you spec it)
• PW = Pegboard over Woodgrain (mixed panel, also special order)
• PM = Pegboard over Marteck (mixed panel)

Pegboard, Marteck, and Marteck Extended are the offerings you can plan a rollout around. Woodgrain and anything with a W in it needs a call before the drawing goes final.

What About Slotwall?

Slotwall is not a BE style code. It is a separate product line with its own prefix, SEB. If your merchandising plan calls for slotwall backs, you are ordering SEB panels, not BE_S, and the splicer and center-rail rules are different from the BE family. Specify slotwall on its own line item and check the SEB pages before you assume the same accessories apply.

When You Need a Two-Piece Stack

Once you cross 72" of back extension, you are in two-piece territory. Lozier publishes eight standard two-piece pairings that cover 78" through 120" of extension height:

The underscores hold the width digit and style letter. For a 4-foot wide section with Pegboard, that becomes:

• 84" of extension, 4-ft wide, Pegboard: BE430P on the bottom, BE448P on top, both stacked between rails.
• 108" of extension, 4-ft wide, Marteck: BE466M on the bottom, BE436M on top.

Match the style letter across both panels of the pair. Do not mix Pegboard on the bottom with Marteck on the top unless you are ordering one of the published PM combo panels as a single piece.

The Center Rail Rule

Every Lozier wall section ships with one Center Rail as part of the base kit. That rail sits behind the shelving zone and takes the load path for the base plus a single back extension panel. It is already in your section count, so you do not order it separately for a standard build.

The rule that catches people: once your total back panel height reaches 96" or more, you need a second Center Rail. That covers the two-piece pairings from 96" up through 120", so plan on adding a Center Rail line item for every one of those sections.

Center Rail SKUs and the Finish Trap

Rail SKUs generally follow the pattern R + width digit + style letter + finish. Center Rails break the pattern on the finish half: Center Rail finish is always N/A. Center Rails ship with no finish specified, because they live behind the panel and never show. Do not chase down "R4C in the same finish as the base rails" and do not put PLT or CHR on the line. If you order a Center Rail with a finish suffix, the order desk will either strip it or come back with a question, and it slows the whole PO down.

Putting It Together: A Worked Example

Say you want a 4-foot wide wall section built to 108" of back extension in Pegboard, Platinum finish, sitting on top of a standard 54" base.

1. Start with your base kit. It already includes one Center Rail.
2. Look up the 108" pairing: BE466P + BE436P.
3. Because total back panel height is 108", which is above the 96" threshold, add one additional Center Rail. Order it with no finish.
4. Confirm the style letter matches on both back panels. Both P, both Platinum.

Your back-panel line items land as:

• BE466P-PLT (lower panel)
• BE436P-PLT (upper panel)
• R4C (additional Center Rail, no finish suffix)

Ship it that way and the section stacks predictably in the field, with the second Center Rail catching the splice between the two panels and taking the extra load the taller back introduces.
