Lozier Upright Notch and Shelf Height Reference
Store planners and reset crews reading this page in the field: everything below is Lozier. Notch numbering may not transfer between manufacturers, so treat this reference as authoritative for Lozier fixtures only. Every number and rule is sourced from the current Lozier catalog and Lozier installation guides.
Lozier Upright Notch Spacing
Lozier Standard Uprites, Heavy Duty Uprites, and Wall-Mount Uprites are all slotted 1″ on center (Lozier catalog: Standard Uprite and Wall-Mount Uprite pages). One-inch spacing is what gives Lozier gondolas their planogram flexibility. Any shelf tab can drop into any slot, so shelf-to-shelf spacing is adjustable in 1-inch increments across the full usable height of the upright.
The practical implication for planners: when you spec a shelf position, you are choosing an integer notch count above the base. There is no half-inch or quarter-inch position available on a standard Lozier upright.
Upright Height Ladder
Lozier offers Standard and Heavy Duty Uprites at the following nominal heights (Lozier catalog, Uprite pages).

Extension Uprite Actual vs Nominal
Extension Uprites are ordered by nominal height but sit shorter than that in the field, per the Lozier catalog Back Extension reference table.

The pattern continues: actual height is 3/16″ less than nominal at every increment listed.
Base Height Shifts the Entire Notch Stack
The first available shelf position is determined by the base component under the upright, not by the upright itself.
- 06 Base is 8″H. This is the standard base height for grocery, drug, hardware, and c-store gondolas (Lozier catalog: base component reference).
- Low Base (LB) is 6″H. Used for lower profile sections and specialty formats.
- The difference (2″) shifts every shelf position in the section up or down by two full notches when a base is swapped.
Field implication: If a planner is matching new shelves to an existing Low Base section but ordering 06 Base, every shelf sits 2″ higher than the old planogram. This is the single most common notch-count mistake we see on hybrid remodels.
Section Width and Upright Spacing
Lozier section widths are 24″, 30″, 36″, or 48″ (2′, 30″, 3′, or 4′), center-to-center on the uprights (Lozier catalog: Island and Wall Section ordering pages).
- Overall run width equals total section width plus 2″ for the last upright.
- Uprites cannot be inserted between existing sections. Expanding a run means adding one section of matching width at the end, or rebuilding the run at a new section-width standard.
- 36″ and 48″ are the two most common section widths in retail. Grocery and hardware run heavier at 48″; drug and beauty often specify 36″ for tighter planograms.
Back Panel Height Math
Nominal back height equals upright height minus 6″ (Lozier catalog: Back Panel ordering instructions). This holds for Pegboard, Marteck, and Slotwall backs.
Actual back height is 3/16″ short of nominal in every row of the catalog reference table:

Section Heights That Require Two-Piece Backs
Sections 78″ and taller require a two-piece back panel, ordered as two components sized to the upright height (Lozier catalog: 2-piece back reference).

Slotwall vs Pegboard vs Marteck: Different Insert Grid
The 1″-on-center notch spacing describes the upright, not the back panel. Back panels have their own accessory grids:
- Pegboard: 9/32″ holes on 1″ centers (Lozier catalog: Pegboard Back page).
- Slotwall: T-slot on 3″ centers. Requires a minimum of 60″ clearance above the shelving to install (Lozier catalog: Slotwall Back page). Slotwall inserts and accessories index to the 3″ grid, not to the upright notch grid.
- Marteck: Different accessory system entirely; not interchangeable with pegboard or slotwall attachments.
Planners often confuse upright notch spacing with back panel accessory spacing. They are two separate coordinate systems in the same section.
Shelf Install Angles and Tab Behavior
How the shelf drops into the upright slot depends on the shelf style (Lozier Gondola Shelving Installation Guide).
- S and TL shelves: tilt the front edge slightly upward, insert tabs into upright slots, lower into flat or 17° downslant position.
- DL shelves: insert tabs straight into slots. DL supports flat, 17° downslant, 30° downslant, and 15° upslope positions on the same shelf.

Anchoring and Stability Rules That Change the Planogram
From the Lozier Gondola Shelving Installation Guide and Heavy Duty Shelving Installation Guide:
- Upright height cannot exceed leveler spacing. If the ratio of upright height to leveler spacing exceeds 6:1, base brackets and uprights must be anchored to the floor.
- Bottom shelf should be installed within 6″ of the floor to stabilize the finished section (storage shelving install guide; conservative baseline for planners).
- All free-standing Wall Sections must be anchored when not backed against a building wall, regardless of upright height.
- Base fronts (open or closed) are required for structural integrity. A section without base fronts may collapse under load.
These rules override any planogram that a merchandiser drops on the section. If the plan calls for a top shelf at 96″ on a 60″-tall island with 24″ leveler spacing, the anchoring math kicks in before the shelf math.
Notch Position Math: A Working Example
Section: 84″ Standard Uprite, 06 Base, first shelf on the deck. Planner wants shelf 2 at 24″ above the deck.
- 06 Base places the deck surface at approximately 8″ from the floor.
- Standard Uprite notches begin above the base and run 1″ on center to the top.
- Shelf 2 tab goes into the notch 24 slots above the first slot, placing the shelf face at approximately 32″ from the floor.
- Verify actual deck-to-first-notch offset in the field for the specific upright and base combination. Notch counts are exact; the floor-to-first-notch measurement depends on leveler adjustment and base bracket seating.
This is why planograms specify notch count from the deck, not floor height in inches. In-field measurement should always be validated at the fixture.
Cross-Manufacturer Caution
Notch numbering may not transfer between manufacturers. If your store contains mixed fixtures from an earlier remodel, do not assume the notch position that gives you a 48″ shelf on a Lozier upright will give you a 48″ shelf on any other manufacturer's upright. This page is a Lozier reference only. For mixed-fixture sections, measure at the fixture.
