In our experience supplying gondola shelving to retailers across formats, the layout of a store, meaning how customers move through it and what sits next to what, tends to shape sales more than the specific fixtures we ship. A quality gondola in a poorly planned aisle can underperform a plain one on a well planned aisle. This piece walks through the traffic patterns and adjacency conventions documented in retail literature, and how they interact with the gondola sizing choices you will actually make.
The Three Traffic-Flow Patterns
Retail store layouts are commonly grouped into three families in the retailing literature: grid, racetrack (also called loop or boutique), and free-form [cite: Levy, Weitz & Grewal, Retailing Management, 10e]. Each drives different customer behavior and pairs with a different gondola configuration.
Racetrack (Perimeter Loop)
The racetrack puts a wide perimeter aisle around the outside of the store with a center grid of aisles inside the loop. Herb Sorensen's Path Tracker study of roughly 60,000 supermarket shoppers found that the dominant traffic pattern was around the perimeter, with customers taking short "excursions" into center aisles rather than walking every aisle end to end [cite: Sorensen, Inside the Mind of the Shopper]. That is why grocery stores anchor produce, deli, meat, dairy, and bakery on the perimeter.
Section width on the perimeter is a design choice, not a rule. Lozier Island and Wall Sections are offered in 2', 30", 3', and 4' widths, in heights from 36" to 120" in 6" increments [cite: Lozier Catalog, Island Section and Wall Section pages]. In our experience, many operators use shorter perimeter runs (in the 48" to 60" height range) so the customer can see across to the fresh departments, and taller center-store runs (72" to 84") to maximize facing density. Those numbers are conventions we see in the field, not a Lozier spec.
Grid (Straight-Aisle)
The grid runs parallel aisles from front to back with a cross-aisle at the far end. Levy, Weitz and Grewal note the grid is cost efficient because aisles are the same width and tall shelving fits more merchandise on the floor, which is why most supermarkets and full-line discounters use it [cite: Levy, Weitz & Grewal, Retailing Management, 10e]. It is well suited to destination shopping and less suited to browsing.
Aisle width in a grid has a hard floor and a soft ceiling. The hard floor is ADA: walking surfaces on accessible routes must be 36 inches minimum clear width, with narrow exceptions, and routes narrower than 60 inches require passing spaces at intervals no greater than 200 feet [cite: 2010 ADA Standards §403.5.1 and §403.5.3]. In practice we see grocery and hardware operators run aisles well above the ADA floor, often in the 6' to 8' range for cart-based formats, because 36 inches is a wheelchair-passage minimum, not a comfortable two-cart aisle.
Free-Form (Boutique)
Free-form layouts abandon straight aisles in favor of grouped fixture clusters on a designed path. Levy, Weitz and Grewal describe it as an asymmetric arrangement of displays and aisles using varied sizes and shapes, which has been shown to increase the time customers spend in the store [cite: Levy, Weitz & Grewal, Retailing Management, 10e]. Cosmetics halls, specialty apparel, and gift retailers use it because time in store is the merchandising story.
Free-form pairs well with shorter gondola runs so sightlines carry across the room, and with mixed section widths. Lozier's four standard section widths (2', 30", 3', 4') give enough granularity to build feature clusters without custom fabrication [cite: Lozier Catalog, Island and Wall Section pages].
Category Adjacency
Adjacency is the discipline of placing categories in a sequence that lifts basket size. The retailing textbook treatment frames adjacency around complementary categories, impulse placement near the traffic path, and avoiding incompatible pairings [cite: Levy, Weitz & Grewal, Retailing Management, 10e, store layout chapter]. Beyond that framework, specific pairings ("pasta near sauce", "cereal near the dairy end of the aisle") are conventions we see repeatedly in the field rather than universal rules. In our experience, the operators who audit adjacency deliberately tend to find at least one obvious miss on the first pass.
The Entry Threshold
Paco Underhill's Why We Buy introduced the terms "landing strip" and "decompression zone" for the area just inside the front door. Underhill's argument is that arriving customers are still adjusting their walking speed, peripheral vision, and eyes to the interior light, and merchandise placed in that transition tends to be "blown past" [cite: Underhill, Why We Buy, decompression zone / landing strip discussion]. Underhill does not, to our reading, prescribe a specific footage; the "15 to 20 feet" figure that circulates on retail blogs is a rule of thumb, not a cited measurement. Practically, the takeaway is durable: do not put commodity merchandise in the first few strides, and give the arriving customer a visual anchor pulling them deeper into the store.
How Gondola Height Interacts with Layout
Tall Lozier sections (84" and above are cataloged up to 120") block sightlines [cite: Lozier Catalog, height options 36" to 120"]. That is fine in a grid where the customer walks one aisle at a time. In a free-form or racetrack layout the merchandising story often depends on seeing the next zone from the current one, so stepping fixture height down near category transitions helps. This is a design judgment, not a spec.
What to Change First
If you are auditing an existing store and can only change one thing, in our experience the entry zone gives the biggest visible lift for the least capital, followed by adjacency reworks, and only then by fixture upgrades. That ordering is opinion built from projects we have quoted, not a benchmarked ROI figure, and any specific store's answer depends on what is broken.
